• RTAC (Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee): A programme that assesses fertility services against specific reproductive technology standards. It often covers clinical and laboratory aspects of IVF.
• ISO 9001: A quality management system certification. It shows that an organisation has a structured approach to quality, but it is not specific to medical laboratories.
• ISO 15189: A standard specifically for medical laboratories. It covers competence, quality and technical requirements. This is often the most directly relevant to an embryology or genetics laboratory.
• CAP (College of American Pathologists): A laboratory accreditation programme that includes inspections and proficiency testing. It is widely recognised in laboratory medicine.

How to verify accreditation claims step by step

1. Ask for the certificate and its scope. Request a copy of the current certificate or a link to the issuing body’s online directory. Check the exact legal name of the laboratory or hospital, the certificate number, the issue and expiry dates, and the activities covered.
2. Check the issuing body’s website. Most accreditation bodies maintain a searchable list of accredited organisations. If you cannot find the clinic, ask the clinic to explain why.
3. Clarify what is accredited. Is it the whole hospital, the IVF clinic, the embryology laboratory, or the genetics laboratory? A hospital-level JCI certificate does not automatically mean the IVF laboratory is accredited.
4. Ask about proficiency testing. Laboratories should participate in external quality assessment schemes for the tests they perform. Ask which schemes they use and how often they receive results.
